The Chalkboard Cup Project steamed from my past explorations in ceramic drinking sets. With these sets I wanted to give the users a feeling of a ceremony within a normal, casual interaction of people. During a small, communal event, there is a communication beyond words. This communication may happen in gestures, looks, or just implied by the feeling of the group. I began thinking about unspoken or written language that happens between people. The Chalkboard Cups gave the drinker a space or place to express this other language or conversation on actual parts of the cup that chalk could be used to make marks on. Many of these cups had special housing for the chalk. The chalkboard cups created a situation where the drinker could have an individual conversation with themselves or a conversation with another drinker.
